Understanding the Shifting Landscape
The project required thought into not only the current site and conditions, but also to provide a solution that was flexible as the site conditions changed in the future. The evolution of the coastline meant that the architecture designed here also had to be able to adapt and evolve in coordination with its context.
My building programme was centred on the theme of climatology and displacement, studying the ways in which this famously temperamental site was to be affected by climate change. This research was then to be used in such a way that the future generations of the coastal towns surrounding the building could learn about these processes and the best ways in which to maintain both the unique coastline and the existing properties and landmarks made inland by man. These two primary functions were to be blended together into one building, a research and education facility, which would help to shape the coastline for years to come, due to its investigations into how the environment will change the landscape around us.
