Regeneration of Urban Nottingham
The project aimed to provide regeneration to a community on the outskirts of Nottingham. To help provide places to work and live that would provide spaces that would help to build community spirit.
I wanted to provide units that would provide maximum benefit to the community, drawing up on the heritage of the place and it's existing culture to provide influence.
I proposed to provide units which would enable the occupants to utilise local produce from the nearby allotments to provide ingredients for a small cafe. My 3 residential units were to be fairly typical of the area with red brick facades. My main design interpretaion for the residential units was to provide living space on the first floor with small terraces overlooking the multi-functional courtyard and across the town, with sleeping space on the ground floor. This was proposed to ensure that whilst the courtyard was busy during the day, residents could have social living space on the first floor, whilst the private space on the groundfloor was appropriate for when the courtyard was uninhabited at night.
The courtyard would feature external areas for the cafe, native fruit trees to provide colour and further ingredients, and a small timber structure for use as market stalls at the weekend and for additional seating during the week.
