Nottingham Cultural Quarter
This group project took an unsuccessful social square in Nottingham and aimed to create an identity and purpose for the space.
As a group, we aimed to bring the square to life and provide it with a function. Our priority being to create a sense of place which complimented the very successful market square and provided a link and extension of the surrounding cultural buildings.
Our proposal involved the re-purposing of surrounding buildings from small businesses to bars and restaurants with external areas to create an atmosphere more befitting of a town square and provide activity to the area at all hours.
We proposed to introduce raised, tiered spaces with glass partitions which could be used for projections to advertise events or to form informal booths where buskers, comedians and dancers could perform for the passing public. These tiered spaces could also introduce areas of informal seating, planting and water to soften the landscape.
