Ephemeral Nature

The project aimed to create a natural observatory within the grounds of Wollaton Hall, Nottingham. The park which the hall sits in has beautiful open green spaces, a lake and areas of woodland. My project was situated in an area of trees located opposite the lake.

One of my key influences for the project were the water lillies growing in the lake nearby which start out in the murky depths and grow towards the light at the surface. I  represented this with an entrance low down amongst the trees which leads the visitor on a spiralling journey towards the observation gallery in the canopy.

I desired a simple space in which the natural elements of the site were able to take over the mind of the occupant. I proposed a simple structure that would allow this to happen with a steel frame clad with natural timber boarding. Thus affording sound, smells and textures of the immediate context to penetrate the space.
