Garden Room Extension, Colchester
The existing property is an end terrace home set in a busy conservation area in Colchester. The close proximity to Colchester Castle make the site challenging to work with owing to its archealogical built up ground and prominent position of the house within the conservation area.
Our clients wished to remove some low quality single skin brick storage buildings, and replace them with a new purpose built space that provided room to sit and relax to enjoy the beautiful garden.
The space was also to be used to allow some further storage, and to allow work surface for carrying out daily tasks. Located off the kitchen, the new extension provides space for the washing machine and tumble dryer, freeing up further space within the kitchen.

The roof is a lean to slate roof, carefully matching the existing material palette on site to provide a sensitive approach for the conservation area. This neatly junctions with a party wall, which is carefully detailed to conceal a hidden gutter detail.
The rear elevation is largely glazed, providing natural light into the internal spaces and connection to the rear garden. The glazing also provides great reflections of the planting.
Further glazed panels are used internally, reflecting the external forms, to provide natural light to the pantry and storage space beyond.
Externally, a new enlarged patio area was installed. This provides a great seating area that benefits from the new improved connection with the house via the new extension.
The project was completed by Pilgrim Builders in Autumn 2024.
